OLKA PRACTICE JOURNEY
Embarking on the Ear-Whispered
Nine Ngnodro Journey
to Purification & Accumulation

Jan. 2025

Dakini’s Whisper was founded on the vision of awakening to our deepest, most meaningful lives for the benefit of all beings—here and now, in this contemporary world and beyond. This vision can only be realized by walking in the footsteps of the great masters who came before us, while discerning how their wisdom can be fully integrated into modern life.

In 2026, Dakini’s Whisper celebrates ten years as a global online community of practitioners. Over the years, some of our students have been inspired to take on the noble aspiration of a long retreat. Such a profound intention doesn’t arise by accident—it is nurtured by guidance, practice, and deep devotion. As a lifelong practitioner, I feel strongly called to support and encourage this kind of aspiration. Let’s get series!

In our Ear-Whispered Geluk lineage, we hold nine profound Ngöndro, also known as “preliminaries.” In our lineage, these Ngondro practices entail a life-long journey. Traditionally, these practices prepare us for the Great Tantric Retreat, but they are equally powerful for those who wish to root Dharma practice deeply in their busy modern lives. When Lama Tsongkhapa asked Manjushri for instructions on realizing the ultimate view, Manjushri advised him to purify negative karma and accumulate merit through the preliminaries at Olka Hermitage.

Our lineage takes this to heart. The time has come for Dakini’s Whisper to take this to heart.

The Four Common Preliminaries:

(Contemplations on Lamrim - Precious Human Life, Impermanence, Karma, and the Nature of Suffering)

The Nine Uncommon Preliminaries include:

  • Prostration

    • Traditionally, the Geluk do 100,000 full-length prostrations to the 35 Confessional Buddhas through The Sutra of Three Heaps, based on Lama Tsongkhapa’s example at Olkha Hermitage.

  • Refuge & Bodhicitta

    • To connect with the foundation of Buddhist practice and the Mahayana path, practitioners would recite the Refuge and Bodhicitta prayer 100,000 times.

  • Vajrasattva Mantra Recitation

    • To purify eons of negative karma, the masters would visualize Vajrasattva Buddha and accumulate 100,000 repetitions of the 100-syllable mantra.

  • Mandala Offering

    • To generate an immense amount of merit, 100,000 repetitions of the mandala offering verse are accumulated while one visualizes the purified universe, using mandala offering plates and heaps of rice.

  • Lama Tsongkhapa’s Guru Yoga

    • To connect to the source of the Geluk tradition and gain complete confidence in the Guru, ear-whispered yogis engage in Lama Tsongkhapa’s guru yoga, Ganden Lhagyama, and recite the migtsema prayer 100,000 times.

  • Water Bowl Offerings

    • Based on the tradition of the progenitor of the Kadampa lineage, Jowo Je Atisha, the perfection of generosity is practiced, and great merit is accumulated by offering 100,000 bowls of pure water.

  • Dorje Khadro (Vajra Daka) Fire Offering

    • A “golden dharma” passed directly to Lama Tsongkhapa from Manjushri, where 100,000 mantras are accumulated by offering black sesame seeds to Dorje Khadro, who takes the form of an offering fire.

  • Tsa-tsa (clay images of the deity)

    • The practice of creating 100,000 images of one’s Yidam out of materials like clay or plaster to create the merit and interdependent arising for a great retreat.

  • Samayavajra Mantra Recitation

    • Reciting 100,000 mantras of a special form of Amoghasiddhi to purify any negative karma made in relation to the Guru.

Each is repeated 100,000 times, building merit and clearing obstacles. Their benefits are immeasurable.

With great joy and excitement, Dakini's Whisper announces that beginning in January 2026—our 10th anniversary year—we will launch a group and personal journey into the Nine Ngnodros. KL will teach each practice, explain its meaning, and offer practical tips for completing the accumulations. We will organize bi-weekly group practice sessions. Together, as a sangha, we will support one another on this transformative path.
